The NRHA Futurity: A Journey of Trust and Progression

The NRHA Futurity is the holy grail of reining. It has been my north star for years. October serves as my reality check with Eclectic Stars--a chance to see how we hold together under pressure. If a bubble shows up or I make mistakes, I need to face it without letting it crack my confidence. This show isn’t about proving perfection; it’s about testing how solid we really are before Oklahoma.

A Long Break from Showing

I haven’t shown consistently since 2016. Long story short: I stepped away, and for years, I didn’t ride at all. I only came back in 2024. Sure, I’ve got plenty of history before that, but most riders heading to the futurity have spent years testing their nerves and refining their show skills in the pen. I haven’t. Coming back after such a long gap and with so little recent show mileage is intimidating. I believe in myself, but I’m also realistic.

First Full Pattern with Eclectic Stars

Back in May at the "Hollywood Charity" show, I put Eclectic Stars through her first full pattern. She gave me two solid runs--71.5 and 71--that even won us the Snaffle Bit Hackamore class. It wasn’t about the ribbon; it was about finally feeling like the pieces were starting to click.

Preparing for The Challenge

The next show, "The Challenge" in October, is at the facility I moved into this month. That doesn’t mean I’ve got the full home-field advantage. The show pen isn’t one I get to ride in often. The footing won’t be prepped for reining until right before the show. So it’s familiar but not routine--same walls, different dirt. But it still makes the pressure sharper. I can’t chalk mistakes up to hauling or adjusting to a new place. It’s just me, my nerves, and the gap between a quiet practice ride and laying it down under judges and a crowd.

The Importance of Trust and Connection

Building trust with a horse is crucial. It’s not just about the technical skills; it’s about the bond we create. I’ve spent countless hours working with Eclectic Stars, focusing on her natural ability and progression. Each ride is a step toward understanding each other better. This connection is what makes the difference in the show pen.

Facing the Reality of Competition

Dreams don’t always run on time. Mine certainly didn’t. But I’m here now, with this filly I’ve made from zero to show, stepping back after years away. October is our test. December is the dream.

The Road Ahead

As I prepare for the upcoming shows, I remind myself that every ride counts. Each moment spent with Eclectic Stars is an opportunity to grow. I’m excited about the journey ahead. The challenges may be daunting, but they are also what make this sport so rewarding.

Conclusion: Try Harder!

I’ve done the work, the mare is dialed in, and the rest is on me. I'll try the best I can, then... try harder.
